3. What Does Luke Say? (2) Mary and Martha

Updated: Oct 2, 2022

In this lesson we continue our journey with Luke reflecting on his presentation of women in his gospel. We focus on one of the scenes that is unique to his gospel - Martha & Mary (Luke 10:39-42).

Early in the lesson we spend time reflecting on the 1st Century cultural understanding of women. How radical was Luke's presentation of women? How radical was Jesus' treatment of women? It is common to hear someone say something like, "Every Jewish male regularly prayed, 'Thank you God that I was not born a Gentile, or a woman!'" Is this a fair representation of how all Jewish men thought about women?

Then we attempt to read the Martha & Mary story for all it's worth.
