Forsaken... But not (An extended reflection on Psalm 22:1)

Wouldn’t it be odd that if Jesus’ cry of dereliction from the cross meant that God actually abandoned him, while Psalm 22 says otherwise?

We find the opening line of Psalm 22 on the lips of Jesus in Mark 15:34. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" What do these words mean on Jesus' lips as he breathes his last? Did God forsake Jesus in his darkest hour?

What do these words mean in the larger context of the Psalm? Can a close examination of the Psalm itself inform our understanding of Jesus cry of dereliction? I think so.
